A little about the deck…
My vision and end goal for the Silver Acorn was to create a curious and nostalgic little world where I could transport Tarot readers. A dreamlike place that seemed strangely familiar, full of magic and whimsy with an old storybook-like quality…and a bit of mystery if you looked a little deeper.
About the project.
Why Tarot?
My journey with the Tarot began thirty years ago, as soon as I discovered the Smith-Waite deck for the very first time, in a tiny metaphysical shop in the little town where I grew up. And to be completely transparent here, at ten years old, I had no real understanding of the Tarot. I didn’t know what the cards meant, I didn’t know what I could do with them or how to do a proper reading. But what I did know: Bells went off as soon as I discovered those illustrated cards, I felt a connection to them and needed them in my hands! The true journey was at play over the years, getting to know the cards, letting things unfold, connecting with visuals, creating narratives and being open to the possibilities. The cards helped me gain confidence in myself and my intuition when I had none and for me, that changed everything.
Since, Tarot has always been an integral part of my life, practice and creative process. Like so many artists, it was always a dream goal to create my own deck, to really get in there and devote the time to painting the 78 cards and see where it would go. Several attempts were made during the past 10-15 years and it just never felt right or I wasn’t able to devote myself completely. I’d get halfway through and stop, creative blocks happened, I’d reach a point and felt it wasn’t good enough (Yay, self doubt!), etc. It was important to me to not force it if it wasn’t working, it needed to just unfold and feel right.
During the winter of 2021, I decided to take the leap and devote the time to working primarily on a deck of my own. And so, the Silver Acorn Tarot happened!
The Silver Acorn Tarot is a colorful and odd, anthropomorphic Tarot deck inspired by nature with some heavy autumnal and fairytale vibes. Each card was hand drawn + hand painted with gouache paint on watercolor paper. A deeply personal project, I relied on a lot of my own personal experiences, practice, and intuition to connect the dots between imagery, symbolism, and color in the cards. I wanted to go back to that concept of “play” for this deck. While there was a great deal of planning with the art and direction initially, it was important to remain open while painting, to really enjoy it. To create a little world, a cast of characters and just let things flow.
This was a massive undertaking and I’m so fortunate to have some incredible folks in my life who really helped make this project shine bright. It’s been an honor to work with my friend Madame Pamita, who brought her expertise as a professional Tarot reader, teacher and writer to the Silver Acorn Guidebook that accompanies the deck. My dear friend Micol Hiatt, who edited the project and provided endless support and encouragement through it all. And my talented partner Rob Harrigan, who brought his design skills to the table, pushed the project to the next level and truly helped create something unique to put out in the world.
There was a lot of love, sweat and tears put into this deck, and I truly hope it will bring a little bit of happiness to all who use it on their Tarot journey!
