Part of a three piece print set, “Rosemary” was originally hand painted with gouache paint on arches watercolor paper. These three pieces (or three sisters, as I like to call them) were painted as a set towards the end of summer/2020, inspired by plant lore and various forms of folk art, two subjects I’ve taken a bit of a deep dive into these months while in quarantine this year. I found these pieces to be a bit of a personal exploration into more of a decorative approach to painting, a little less planned and a bit more organic, incorporating some techniques I use for pattern making.
One of three sister cats, Rosemary has been painted in deep black, forest green, purple and creme on a muted ochre background, surrounded by bright blooms, berries, snakes, rats and bats. She holds a white skull on her right with a little floating white candle on her left. Her apron depicts a decorative design of a little house with two small weeping willows-I like to think she’s a kind of protector of this little home and a “barrier” to all of the elements surrounding her that could pose as a threat.
My Rosemary has been beautifully reproduced from my original painting and offered here as a new giclée print. All prints offered in my shop are high quality, printed on heavy, museum quality 100% cotton rag acid free watercolor paper (Arches brand/310g) , using 100+ year archival pigments.
